"Shear Power Invitational” ....SHEAR ENTERTAINMENT....
Perth City Muster, Claremont Showgrounds, February 25th 2006
Over 8 thousand City Muster fans witnessed the fast and furious pace of the first "Shear Power Invitational" at the Claremont Showgrounds on the weekend.
The "Shear Power Sprint" kick started the event with the heats between the invited international shearers Kiwi legend Darin Forde, South African Ken Norman, Englishman Mark Fox, Scotsman Tom Wilson and Australia’s own Brett King being being closely fought.
Kiwi Darin Forde led the tallies of the 2 heats by a marginal 1 sheep to go through to the final while several deadlocks were separated via sudden deaths shear offs with Brett King scraping through. The head to head final was pure excitement with Darin eventually breaking free of the
gallant Aussie triumphing with a 1 sheep win.
A new Merino Ewe Speedshear World Record was set with Darin Forde taking a clean sweep of the event and proving he is the fastest shearer on earth and will take some effort to beat at future “Shear Power Invitationals”.
His time of 48.87 seconds gives him his fifth official World Record, closing in on Australia’s own Dwayne Black who holds 6 (Dwayne recently was stripped of his Strongwool Ewe Speedshear WR to Shane Harvey of NZ).
The “Celebrity Challenge” was exactly that to the 9 competitors that took part in this Australian Wool Innovation’s Shearer and Woolhandling Training Program initiative.
With a little a guidance from two AWI shearing instructors (Darryl Cole and Derald King) in the morning training session
took up the challenge with open arms.
