The down-to-earth, very readable story of Tom Brough – man of many parts. While remembering his challenging childhood in the King Country backblocks Tom explains what life was like in the area for the earlier pioneers. After minimal schooling, Tom Brough tells of his sheep-shearing days, when he shore in gangs all over New Zealand, and how he became a Golden Shears Open Champion.
After buying a run-down farm, Tom improved it to the point where he was King Country Farmer-of-the-Year. A noted hunter (pigs and deer in New Zealand), Tom has trekked in the Himalayas, rafted the Colorado River, cycled in China and canoed on the Yukon River. He has hunted Wapiti in Fiordland and Sika deer in the Kaimanawa, Rusa deer in New Caledonia, pigs, deer etc. in Australia,  moose in Finland, plains animals in Namibia, and Ibex and Elk in Mongolia – all of which he writes about in entertaining detail.
