GOLDEN SHEARS NUMBER FIFTEEN FOR FAGAN  -  By DES WILLIAMS

Shearing maestro David Fagan claimed Golden Shears title number 15 before a packed house at Masterton's War Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. Facing strong challenges from 2002 champion John Kirkpatrick and Southland's Darin Forde in the days leading up to the final, Fagan turned on a stunning performance to blitz the world class field by more than three points. He finished one sheep ahead of Kirkpatrick and more than matched the Napier man's quality ratings to claim the title and reinforce his standing as world champion.

Earlier in the evening, Fagan teamed with his nephew, James Fagan and Oamaru's Barry Taylor to lead New Zealand home in the test match against Australia by a three point margin. The win allowed New Zealand to square the biannual series, with Australia having won the first leg at Esperance last October.

Southland's Darin Forde won the Wrightson multi-breeds national championship for the fourth time in his career to confirm his status as New Zealand's leading all-round shearer. The physically demanding event requiring expertise in shearing merinos, corriedales, full wool sheep, second shear sheep and lambs provided Forde with the ideal platform to demonstrate his mastery. He beat second-placed Tony Coster of Rakaia by three points, with tenacious James Fagan a point further back in third place.

World woolhandling champion Joanne Kumeroa's retirement last season proved short-lived. The Wanganui woman lined up in the open woolhandling competition and secured her third Golden Shears crown, have previously succeeded at the venue in 1995 and 2001.

The Hawkes Bay retained its reputation for producing future champions, with Cam Ferguson of Waipawa (senior) and Karl Nathan (Waipawa) winning the senior and intermediate titles respectively. Adam Brausch and Aaron Paewai, both of Dannevirke, also gained top six placings in the senior final, with Sam Welch and Paerata Abraham doing likewise in the intermediate division.
