| Dion King, of Napier, won the open final at the first Great Raihania Shears, at the Hawke's Bay Show in Hastings, NZ, on Thursday, October 21, 2004. A member of the organising committee returned shearing to the show after an absence of 15 years, Dion was first off the board in the 20-sheep final, and held out John Kirkpatrick, also from Napier, and the great David Fagan, of Te Kuiti, who were second and thirds respectively. The revival of the event was celebrated with it being named The Great Raihania Shears in memory of New Zealand's first great machine shearer, Raihania "The Great" Rimitiriu who won the event in 1902. It has since been reported that was the first machine shearing competition in the World. His grandson, Nolan Raihania, of Mahia, near where The Great Raihania is buried in Northern Hawke's Bay, was present for the event. |

When I was at school a teacher told us
about sheep wearing small boots to prevent foot rot. We all
laughed at his "joke". He brought into class a small
black boot and proved his point. Unfortunately, I cannot get

New Zealand has just had it's largest gathering of
merino woolclassers. The first seminar run by NZ Merino specifically for
woolclassers was held in Timaru on June 3 and 4 and reported an overwhelming
success. More than 100 classers, owner classers and other interested people attended the event which was sponsored by Merino Inc (merino woolgrowers in NZ). It was the first time a national event specifically for merino classers had been held. The classers attended a range of workshops which covered the practical, market/end use, new developments and technical aspects of classing; visited a topmaking mill; the opportunity for input into a classer forum plus a group dinner with a guest speaker. A show of hands at the end indicated strong support for the event being held each year. For more information www.classerselect.co.nz |

| PROMOTING the shearing industry by exposing it is the aim of a new calendar issued by photographer Ramona Peters. The calendar features naked shearing and Woolhandling champions from Australia, New Zealand and other Countries. World Woolhandling Champions Australian Aroha Garvin and Joanne Kumeroa NZ. World Shearing Champion David Fagan. World Shearing record Holders, Dion Morrell and Darin Forde.National Champion Hilton Barrett Australia, and other Top Industry People. - It’s about raising the profile of the shearing industry and getting younger people interested in it, says Peters. Originally from Germany, she says she fell in love with shearing after falling in love with North Canterbury shearer Richard Sampey. Together they set up the Flatmates Art Company and produced the calendar, which Peters says allows them to give something back to the industry as well as the Kiwi Can children’s organisation, which receives a donation from each calendar sold. - Get Yours Now Click Here |

| Alternative Shearing methods continue to get millions of dollars funding, when nothing commercially viable has ever come out of these schemes to date - New Zealand born shearing staff dominate all over the shearing world, due to money spent on TRAINING and COMPETITIONS, changing attitudes, good work ethics and shearing patterns, with less strain on the individuals body. Therefore the price of shearing to the woolgrower is very competitive and low due to improved output and also higher quality - Where are dollars better spent, on training or on expensive alternative white elephants - Press release |
